iconOsteoarthritis treatment

Osteoarthritis is a condition characterized by the wear and tear of the cartilage that lines the bone. The cartilage in the bones would normally breakdown as part of the biological cycle but would also be replaced by a new cartilage, if you have osteoarthritis, the broken down cartilage may not be replaced hence causing much damage to the joint. Osteoarthritis treatment would need the cooperation and commitment of the patient since it doesn’t only involve prescribed medication by the doctor but would also involve taking care of one’s health in general.

Osteoarthritis treatment

One osteoarthritis treatment is the use of oral pain relievers like an aspirin, or ibuprofen which could help manage the pain and application of pain relieving creams that has a base formula of capsaicin substance often found in cayenne and other chili peppers. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs could also be given since the pain will be greatly reduced when the inflammation of the joint is prevented. Long term use of NSAIDs can cause stomach ulcers so it is advised to only use it when necessary. Cortisone injections are also common since its pain relieving properties is more rapid acting and has a longer effect to the patient but one should also be aware that like any other synthetic drug used in a prolonged period of time, it also has a side effect that causes the bone and the surrounding tissue to weaken. A similar type of treatment is the injection of hyaluronic acid also known as viscous supplement. This acid would thicken the existing joint fluid so that there would be better lubrication in the joint hence pain will be relieved because friction on the joint is eliminated.

An alternative option for osteoarthritis treatment is also an option. Utilizing the healing and medicinal properties of certain herbs and plants would help relieve pain and ease the swelling by natural means. This type of treatment is often preferred by many because there is no risk of suffering from any side effects and is also an inexpensive way to treat the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Glucosamine and chondroitin are supplements that have been found by many to help maintain the elasticity of the joint cartilage which relieves the patient of suffering from pain and discomfort.  Following a healthy diet is critical because eating certain foods may trigger the symptoms to flare up in an instant. Researches have shown that although foods may not be directly affecting the disease but it would trigger a type of body response causing the symptoms to appear. Because of the pressure in the joints, walking and jogging are no longer suitable and advisable exercises for an arthritic patient. Swimming should replace your ordinary routine exercise since this won’t create any impact to the affected joints. Lessening the stress and the pressure in the joint is the main goal for the losing excess weight and maintaining a light healthy weight for arthritic patients.

Surgical options would include arthroscopy, osteotomy, chondroplasty, arthrodesis and joint removal. Surgical options are needed if osteoarthritis is already in its advanced stages.
